Known and back to the family Verloop

this antique wax seal found it's way back to
a descendant of the family

Verloop

the matrix shows a lovely coat of arms
with a shield per fess,
with a carpenters square and a running horse,
the supporters are winged angels,
holding the shield with one hand and a palm branch in the other,
they stand with their weight on one leg

for a nice and extensive document about the family history,
written by A. Verloop from Kirkland, USA,
search with:
Genealogie van het geslacht Verloop, Verloop Voorouders
it is written in Dutch, but there are many illustrations,
also of other known Verloop crests

Unknown: from a coat of arms with a tree and a sun or aureole, to Ovidius and Shakespeare

this coat of arms is in the Baroque style,
for the 17th and early 18th century

on the oval shield we see: in argent - silver a tree fructed,
a tree in full leaf,
with a magnifier we can see it's
bearing three round fruits, each with a cross,
above the tree is a female, she has breasts,
she is surrounded with rays of light;
a nimbus, mandorla or aureole,
above the shield is a crown with nine pearls,
and beneath the shield a skull

the crosses, one vertical and one horizontal line, on the fruits is the
heraldic hatching for the colour sable / black,
a tree with black fruit is a mulberry tree.

I did not find a coat of arms or crest like this...

And that's when my fantasy is allowed to take over:

a lady is glorius, but dead,
a skull on the ground, meaning an other person died,
all happening near a mulberry tree.

That brings me to Ovid.
Publius Ovidius Naso wrote in 43 BC, his
Metamorphoses IV:55-166, the story of Pyramus and Thisbe.

"and you, tree who now covers a single miserable corpse and soon will cover two, retain the memory of our deaths and always bear fruit dark with the colors of mourning, the markins of our mingled blood"

In 1595, William Shakespeare was inspired by Ovid's couple and wrote
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
and in 1600, A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"and Thisby, tarrying in mulberry shade, his dagger drew and died"

In 1957, Arthur Laurents, Stephen Soundheim and Leonard Bernstein
created the West Side Story with Maria and Tony, with a same, sad ending:

"... make our lives one life, day after day, one life.
Now it begins, now we start: one hand, one heart.
Even death won't part us now...
When love comes so strong, there is no right or wrong...

Known: wax seal with the coat of arms of Barons Forbes - Grace my Guide

"Let thy word be my rule, thy grace my guide"

Grace My Guide,
used as motto by the Forbes clan in Scotland.

From there, at Forbes Castle, Aberdeenshire,
the earlier, old castle called Putachie in the parish of Keig

to a 19th century tailor or kiltmaker in the village New Deer,
a town also known as Achadh Reite or Auchreddie
or to Jane Forbes, who was arrested in 1905 for larceny
or to here, in New York,
Forbes descendants can be everywhere,
but they come from a long time ago:

this armorial stone was found in
the Auld Tour / Preston's Tower of Tolquhon Castle
and is one of the first pieces of mediĆ«val heraldic sculpture
remaining in the north of Scotland

an antique wax seal with a coat of arms and the text:
Barons Forbes - Grace my Guide,
supposed time of use 1734-1804,
probably belonged to:
James 16th Lord Forbes (1724-1804)
who married in 1760 with
Catherine, daughter of Sir Robert Innes of Orton
sold by Delta 98 Den Haag to a
Forbes descendant in the USA

Unknown or... Drooglever - de Bie

an 18th century wax seal stamp
with a confusing coat of arms

we think it might have belonged to a person with relationship to two families

Drooglever and De Bie

also written as or changed into
Droogleever, Drooglever Fortuyn, De Bije

the coat of arms we see here:
in silver an embattled black / sable fess
with on it a lion passant, between seven bees (4 and 3)

we found two occassions where the two families are mentioned together:

in 1739, the marriage of Paulus GerritZn Drooglever & Petronella De Bie,
see: Parenteel van Ambrosius De Bije, go to no.159 to find them and their children

and
in 1770, the built of Het Hofje Van Mevrouw Van Aarden / Aerden
 in Leerdam, The Netherlands

Hofjes or Almshouses in Holland were managed by a board of members called Regenten,
Paulus Drooglever and Huibert De Bie were Regenten of that hofje,
their coat of arms are present in the building since 1770-1772
